Information for Media

The CPSIA-Central is a meeting place for individuals, business owners, and other groups to gather to discuss CPSIA and work together for changes. We do not represent any one group. All are welcome, whether they make handmade toys, are crafters, importers, lobbyists, concerned consumers, or otherwise.

We can assist you in finding local interviews with any type of business affected by CPSIA, as well as leaders from various "camps" (apparel, toy, handmade, crafts, etc).

We feel this is an important national story with many angles. Just a few include the horrendous impacts on:
-thrift stores (see NARTS response to CPSC Press Release)
-work at home moms/crafters
-hand made & natural toys, clothes & other similar children's products
-small & medium sized businesses
-sarbanes-oxley implications for larger companies
-special needs populations, and other community groups, including scouting programs
-the environmental impact of mass destruction of perfectly good inventory
-free enterprise & entrepreneurship (or the end thereof)
-collectors of children's products
-ATVs that cannot be sold.

These are but a few angles. We would be pleased to help you find the angle that works for you, to get the story out there.

CPSC Urged to Reconsider Stay on Tracking Labels

Earlier today the Handmade Toy Alliance submitted a letter to newly appointed CPSC Chair Inez Tenenbaum urging her to revisit the issue of a stay on the tracking label requirement which is fast approaching on August 14th. As if to confirm that this is indeed a serious issue facing children's products manufacturers of all shapes and sizes, the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) likewise submitted a letter of their own.

I have posted… Continue

Letter to the Editor - RealGreen (Green America)

Thank you for your article in the spring 2009 edition of RealGreen called “Finding Used Items Online.” As an avid user of freecycle, we feel this, along with the other websites listed, are great ways to reduce the products going into the landfill, while providing real economic relief to others---not to mention the relief of the donors to get the said items out of their garage.… Continue

CPSC Commissioner Appointment Likely to Take Time; Won't Resolve Problem Anyway

(Below is an excerpt of an email I sent today to Congressman McGovern's Legislative Aide, and to the Kennedy & Kerry offices)

Dear Jennifer:

Here is a snippet from a newsletter I received today about the CPSIA and the current status of affairs:

Update
Prepared by Eric Stone, K&L Gates LLC on behalf of ASTRA.
Political landscape: Do not expect significant changes in the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) positions or movement of any remedial legislationContinue

Rick Woldenberg's Comments on Permanent Tracking Labels

As many of you are painfully aware, a huge barrier to being in this market is going to be permanent tracking labels. The CPSC has asked for comments on this issue. Here is Rick Woldenberg's letter to the CPSC. It is painfully thorough in its encapsulation of the many problems arising from this requirement. I urge you to not only write your own letter (I am sure you can quote Rick as appropriate), and send it to the CPSC. Additionally, you should send the same letter to your Congressman and SeContinue

New Report by Congressional Research Service

I just received a copy of a report issued by the Congressional Research Service regarding the implementation of the CPSIA by the CPSC. It gives a reasonable history of the basic issues that have arisen and about some of the dissenting voices. It does refer to the April 1st Rally. It is a good document because it is written from a very matter of fact---n… Continue

ATV Makers get a reprieve....or do they?

To the naked eye, according to the statement from Chairman Thomas Moore issued yesterday, ATV manufacturers have been offered an olive branch by the CPSC....Hmm.

In his temporary final rule on exclusion of youth motorized recreational vehicles from Section 101 of the CPSIA covering lead limits, Moore suggests that ATV's may continue to make and sell their items, even if they are above the CPSIA limits, until the end of the "stay".

HOWEVER.......there is a proverbial "catch". Out of one… Continue

Moore Agrees With ATV Stay of Enforcement

Despite what we are being told by our Democratic "Leadership" Commissioner's Moore & Nord seem to agree more often than not (actually...they have agreed on the last 23 voted upon decision). Here is another example of Moore, seemingly agreeing to issue a stay of enforcement for ATVs.

Why a stay instead of an exemption? He seems to think Congress does not want any lead in these motorcycles ("Congressional desire to protect children from unnecessary contact with leaded components in these vehi… Continue
