I was rather disgusted that after the hour long web conference that the AAP did for the CPSC they insisted on more results needed. Well, more they shall have! A group of UK Children’s Publishers and I are collating printer, production, ink and third-party testing results to send to the CPSC in the fight against this poorly thought out legislation. Just as it is affecting the US it is having a devastating impact on international publishing as a whole. Hopefully I will have this ready by the end of March.

Not sure if any of you sell into the Australian market, but they are now reviewing lead content in Children’s ‘toys’. This has been directly due to the CPSIA however won’t be implemented until January 2010. It has not been decided on the testing methods, limits or whether certificates or specified testing houses will be needed like the CPSIA.

There is SOME support in Congress on this issue. I got a phone call yesterday from a staff member of a ranking member of the House, who "gets it". Waxman is not even responding to other Congressional reps. I'd like to investigate who owns stock in what companies - particularly the testing companies. I smell a rat - how else can you account for people sticking their head in the sand in the face of reason, unless they're just totally ignorant / stupid / brain-dead.

Thanks Vivian. I appreciate you passing on those links. I have already passed on the first set of links to the Glenn Beck show. I will send the next batch now too.

Also, I understand your fatigue and your situation. I am sure I am speaking for everyone when I express my appreciation for the efforts you have made and hope your health improves, and wish you the best in your business. I hope we will still see you around, but your health comes before any of this. Thanks again.

Thanks, Vivian, for the list of articles. I read each one and they make me mad at the stupid government for the blatantly unfair and ill-fashioned law. Grrr.
Elysabeth Eldering Comment by Elysabeth Eldering on February 26, 2009 at 11:34am
Katie, that was in the clarification of books being printed - anything prior to 1985 has to be pulled or destroyed or something - they can no longer be marketed for children is all I know - because apparently there are too many high levels of lead prior to 1985 - who knows - so all the classics will be taken off the shelves and not marketed to children any more - see - back to the stone ages we go - look out Fred, here we come - E :)

Elysabeth, I hadn't heard about the destroying of books prior to 1985. Is that a new concept? What an incredible waste that would be. No more Laura Ingalls Wilder, all the Newbery winners, Ellen Tibbits, Ivanho, Treasure Island, A Wrinkle in Time, and so forth. Shaking my head here.

This article gives a good comparison of myth and truth: http://www.prlog.org/10182756-the-handmade-toy-alliance-clarifies-the-myths-vs-facts-of-the-cpsia.html

That's all I can put together right now. Shouldn't have even done that, but had to.

I think since Vivian started this group that she would be the best person to send all the info to Rob; because there are so many websites that have been promoting CPSIA or not promoting it but trying to get it repealed and there are some really good posts out there. It's still a waste that all books printed before 1985 have to be destroyed, tested or banned or whatever they are going to do with them (put them in the adult book shelves I hope so as not to lose anything) - But that is so typical of the government - let's just do this and not worry about the consequences on people's livelihoods as well as their culture - who needs books? - lol - anyway, maybe Vivian will pipe in here and can compile a listing of blogs that had postings about CPSIA or anything affecting the book industry - E ;)

Help Support the new CPSIA Documentary!

A CPSIA documentary is in the works. Since the mainstream media seems to think this is not worthy of their precious air time, this is another great way to get the word out and put our leaders on the "hot seat" to explain themselves. We know that the impact of this travesty is widespread. Now we just need to collect our pennies together and help support the documentary. We have over 700 members here. Imagine if everyone gave just $20....(that would be $14,000 and good chunk of the cost). Here is a quick way to make a donation.

This is a donation to support the making of a CPSIA documentary (see link for details). CPSIA-Central is not affiliated with this organization, and is offering this space for the paypal button in support of the documentary.
